The Society was formed with the name Swedish Society for Psychotrauma as a non-profit organisation in Gothenburg, Sweden, in May 2013. The name was changed in 2021 to Swedish Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, or SSTSS in short.

The aims of this Society are to disseminate knowledge about psychotraumatology by:

• comprising a network of individuals who are working in or show an interest in psychotraumatology
• promoting research and education in psychotraumatology
• acting as a link between organisations both nationally and internationally regarding issues related to psychotraumatology

The Society is an affiliated society of the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
